Internships
Featured Link:  • Programs of Study •
Internships are an important part of the Wells experience. In recent history, over 87% of Wells students completed more than one internship during their four years of college. Through internships students gain practical experience while earning academic credit. Students also receive hands-on experience in a profession or career field helping them to make decisions concernng educational, career and life goals.  In the most practical terms, internships help students to see how their liberal arts education lead to jobs.  Career Development Services can help students determine how to best connect their area of study to career paths.

Making the Wells Connection
Wells has more than 600 internships on file - many created by alumnae - providing students with invaluable connections throughout the world.  Students are paired with an internship sponsor, and whenever possible wiith an alumna mentor, who will guide them through the experience. Many colleges restrict internships to juniors and seniors. At Wells, however, students experience internships as early as the first year.

Sarah Brower earned 2 credits in Bioloical & Chemical Sciences during her internship at the Clinical Laboratory of Auburn Memorial Hospital. Sarah completed a microbiology research project analyzing antibiotics effectiveness and observed testing and patient care procedures.

The Corporate Affiliates Program

The Wells Corporate Affiliates Program was founded in 1986 to prepare students for leadership in the corporate world and provide unique opportunities for pre- professional training. The program has three components: upper-level internships in America’s top corporations, an investment strategies class in which students manage a financial portfolio currently valued at over $800,000, and a corporate guest lecturer series.

The financial portfolio is managed by students in the investment strategies class under the supervision of an economics and management faculty member. The program brings to campus leaders from the world of commerce who visit classes, present lectures, and meet individually with students. Students consult with guest speakers and research investments to make buy, sell, or hold recommendations. Funds generated by the portfolio are used to support Corporate Affiliates internships. The program also provides other internships in organizations representing science and health, the arts and humanities, and government and public policy.

The internships are offered annually, and students are selected through a competitive process. Many Wells students have received job offers as the direct result of their internship experiences. Corporate Affiliates sponsors who currently provide internships for Wells students include The Bank of New York and Wells Fargo Bank History Department.

Henry Wells Scholars Program: An Exciting Internship Opportunity

As part of a series of innovative policies to make higher education more affordable for students and their families, Wells reconfigured its long established Henry Wells Scholarship program, now guaranteeing eligible students a paid internship of $3,000 during their college career.

Wells' Director of Career Development Services Nancy Karpinski notes, "Many students cannot explore their top internship choices due to financial pressures - the Henry Wells Scholars Program is designed to relieve those pressures. Students will receive guidance from faculty advisors throughout the process to ensure they take maximum advantage of the opportunities."

The paid experience can be in a variety of settings including the workplace, in collaboration with faculty on research, or studying abroad, among other options. The program is guaranteed to all nominated and admitted students with a 90% cumulative high school grade point average. They also must have scored 1150 or higher on the S.A.T. or 28 or higher on the A.C.T.

Nominations may be made by guidance counselors or Wells College alumnae. Guidance counselors and alumnae may nominate more than one student for these prestigious awards. The deadline is February 1.
