About Sponsoring
a Wells College Intern
The Wells College internship plays
an important role in preparing men and women to assume leadership positions
in their communities and in the workplace. The purpose of the program is
to assist students to discover the relationship between the study of liberal
arts and the application of knowledge or techniques from that study in
an on-the-job setting. First and second year students get the chance to
test proposed academic majors and upper-level students the chance to define
actual career or graduate school goals. The sponsoring organization receives
the benefit of highly motivated young people who are eager to work in areas
that interest them and who want to meet professionals who share these interests.
A outstanding internship does the following:
-
Offers pre-professional tasks (less than
50% clerical work)
-
Offers conscientious training and on-going
supervision
-
Offers extra opportunities (i.e. attend
staff meetings, seminars, travel off-site to clients, etc.)
-
Supervisor explains or makes sure intern
gets overview of all departments and functions
-
Supervisor is committed to mentoring,
including career advice and constructive feedback
The most successful internships work around a specific project(s) for which
the intern can take "ownership." The intern should let the sponsor know
how many academic credits she expects to receive and the required number
of hours she needs to work "on-site."

About Housing
a Wells Intern
Each January there are several interns
who will be doing internships in cities other than where they live. While
we do not know until mid-November exactly how many students will request
housing, we estimate that we will need at least as many hostesses as last
year. Alumnae who provide housing will receive a stipend of $50/week from
the student intern. It will be sent directly from the college in mid-December.
Most interns will begin work on January 2nd and end on the 28th.
If you are willing to house an intern
during January 2006, you can assist us in finding the necessary number
of hostesses by printing the intern housing form
available here, completing it and returning it to the Career Services
Office at your earliest convenience. If your circumstances should change
between now and mid-December when we will actually be making housing assignments,
we will certainly understand. The Alumnae/Intern Housing Program is one
of the best examples of the Wells Leadership Connection in action. Do not
hesitate to call if you have any questions.
