WHAT IS AN INTERNSHIP?
An internship is a structured, credit-bearing,
supervised work experience designed to enrich and complement the academic
program. An internship enables you to discover the links between the academic
study of liberal arts and the application of classroom knowledge to practical
work situations. Most internships occur during January intersession, but
they may also be done during the semester or in the summer.
WHY SHOULD I CONSIDER
DOING AN INTERNSHIP?
An internship helps you make the connections
between theory and practice that will give you new insights into your education.
An internship gives you a chance to test out potential major and career
choices to determine whether they are a good fit for your skills, interests,
values, and goals. Establishing your internship will help you develop the
skills needed to execute a job search: resume and cover letter writing,
interviewing, networking, and interpersonal communication. Finally, an
internship helps you gain the experience and make the connections necessary
for gaining an entry level position after graduation.
WHO PARTICIPATES
IN AN INTERNSHIP?
You will work closely with a Faculty
Internship sponsor, an On-Site Sponsor, and Career Development Services
(CDS) in setting up, participating in, and evaluating your internship.
HOW CAN I FIND OUT
ABOUT AVAILABLE INTERNSHIPS?
-
FILEMAKER PRO DATABASE: Over one thousand internships, many of which have
been done by Wells students, have been entered into a database. Search
by geographic location or academic area.
CAREER RESOURCE LIBRARY FILES: Many
of these internships have been done before and are geographically indexed.
Others are new options that have not yet been tried by Wells Students.
INTERNSHIP SOURCE BOOKS: There are
a number of books in the Career Resource Library which list internships
geographically and by field of interest.
BULLETIN BOARDS: Recent internship
possibilities are posted on the bulletin boards in the Career Library and
in a special file marked "New Internships."
FACULTY INTERNSHIP SPONSORS: Faculty
maintain their own files of internship possibilities and can help you generate
ideas.
ALUMNAE-SPONSORED INTERNSHIPS: The
CDS staff can connect you with alumnae who may sponsor internships in various
locations and fields.
FAMILY AND FRIENDS: Don't overlook
these connections; your parents' lawyer, for example, may be able to sponsor
you or know someone else who will!
"HOW TO SET UP AN INTERNSHIP" workshops
are offered by CDS.
CAN AN INTERNSHIP
BE COUNTED TOWARDS MY MAJOR OR MINOR?
This varies by department so be sure to check the Wells College Catalog
for specific details regarding your internship. A Faculty Internship Sponsor
can also answer your questions. Internship course descriptions are also
available in the College Catalog.
WHAT ARE THE INTERNSHIP
COURSE REQUIREMENTS?
This also varies by department, but
may include some combination of paper or journal, an oral presentation
or conference with the Faculty Internship Sponsor, and a written evaluation
from an On-Site Sponsor. The number of credits you plan to receive for
the internship must be decided when you register for the internship.
WHAT ARE THE INTERNSHIP
CREDIT GUIDELINES?
Normally an internship requires a
minimum of 35-40 hours of work on-site per semester hour of credit, plus
an academic component that is negotiated individually between you and your
Faculty Internship Sponsor.

WHAT IS THE GRADING
POLICY FOR INTERNSHIPS?
You will receive a grade of Satisfactory
(s) or Unsatisfactory (U) for your internship.
HOW IS MY INTERNSHIP
EVALUATED?
Your On-Site Sponsor is asked to complete
an evaluation which is sent to your Faculty Internship Sponsor. This evaluation
is used to help determine your internship grade.
You will be asked to complete an Internship
Experience Summary which describes what actually happened during your internship.
This evaluation remains on file in the Career Resource Library so that
other wells students may have the opportunity to do the same internship.
IS FINANCIAL HELP
AVAILABLE FOR MY INTERNSHIP?
Through the Corporate Affiliate Grant
program, grants are available to students whose applications are approved
by their Faculty Internship Sponsors and a Grant Committee. Juniors and
Seniors are strongly favored and considered first in the awarding of grant
money, though sophomores are eligible under exceptional circumstances.
Applications are available in CDS.
MAY I GET PAID FOR
MY INTERNSHIP?
Ordinarily a student does not receive
remuneration for an internship. However, payment for an internship may
be accepted under certain conditions, including (a) to defray internship
expenses with funds such as those provided for Corporate Affiliate internships
and/or other specially endowed internships, or (b) as payment required
by the On-Site Sponsor (i.e. for purposes of insurance or in the case of
general sponsor policy). Any payment, however, must receive approval from
the Faculty Internship Sponsor and CDS.
HOW MAY INTERNSHIPS
MAY I DO WHILE I AM A WELLS STUDENT?
You may accumulate a total of 12 semester
hours of internship during the course of four years.
WHAT ARE MY HOUSING
OPTIONS FOR INTERNSHIPS?
Interns are responsible for locating and
paying for their own housing. Sometimes an On-Site Sponsor may offer housing
or help to make housing arrangements. In rare instances, we can call upon
alumnae to provide housing, for which a fee will be charged.
