Important Dates for January Internships
  • Friday, December 7: Internship Agreement Forms and Liability Waivers due in CDS.
  • Wednesday, December 12: Grant Applications due in CDS. Grants are available to assist students with some of the expenses that may be incurred by their internships - commuting, travel, food, etc. Applications are available in Career Services.
  • Thursday, December 13: Meetings for students doing internships for the first time. Cleveland Auditorium. 11:00 a.m. OR 1:00 p.m.

Internships
Amy Karle, Artist, Binghamton, NY. Assist artist with intensive project to organize and bind collection of monthly time capsules during the January semester break.

New York State Theatre Institute, Troy, NY. Gain experience in each module of the institute -(administrative, educational, technical). Opportunity to audition for productions. Summer, semester, or January.

Kennedy-Willis Center on Down Syndrome, Edmeston, NY. Gain hands-on experience in a residential setting for children and adults. Semester or summer. Apply at least 3 months prior to start.

Mayor's Office, Cortland, NY. Assist new mayor, an alumna, with transition issues, implementation of policies, research and PR.

H.E.L.P. Harlem, New York, NY. Assist an alumna with fundraising/curriculum in small non-profit organization.

KBA Lease Services, Kennett Square, PA. Work with an alumna in January in commercial lease auditing and analysis firm.

Association of State and Territorial Health Officials (ASTHO), Washington, DC. Draft/finalize annotated compendium of genetics and public health projects. Alumna sponsor.

U.S. Department of Justice (PLSL- environment and natural resources division), Washington, DC. Citizen correspondence, reporting on environmental legislation, and researching legal and policy issues. Alumna connection.

WXXI, Rochester, NY. Semester-long internships in various departments of public broadcasting network. Application process.

Summer
Resources for the Future (RFF), Washington, DC. Paid summer internships for organization specializing in research, policy analysis and education. Application materials must be sent by March 15, 2002.

Institute of Paper Science and Technology, Atlanta, GA. Summer internship for science and engineering students. Stipend and housing allowance. Application deadline is January 31, 2002.

Alaska State Parks, various locations. Positions include: natural history interpreter, ranger assistant, archaeological assistant, and trail crew. Housing and expense allowance provided.

Christie's, New York, NY. Summer internship (June 10-August 2) in premier art auction house. Small stipend and lunch allowance. Application deadline is February 8, 2002.

National High Magnetic Field Laboratory, FL and CA. Stipended summer research internships for science and engineering majors. Access information and applications at the website.


Bits and Pieces

Syracuse University offers Summer Study Abroad Programs, most of which are taught on site.

Roswell Park Cancer Institute is sponsoring its 50th Summer Research Participation Program. Application deadline is February 15 for college students.

The Learning Tree Child Care Center, Seneca Falls, NY, seeks energetic and caring students who love kids for part-time positions. Contact Anitra (315-539-9816) for more information.

Funding is available for summer research at Penn State for undergraduates in science and engineering through its BRIE program. Stipend.


Especially for Seniors

The semi-annual New Jersey Collegiate Career Day will be held Friday, January 4, 2002 at Rutgers University, New Brunswick, NJ. Employers will represent approximately 250 companies. On-line pre-registration is encouraged.

Carnegie Mellon University offers two half-tuition Women in Information Technology Fellowships for applicants with strong leadership skills and commitment to field of information systems. Deadline is February 1, 2002.

Finch College, a women's college which closed in the 1970's, has a foundation which awards $1500 grants for women who wish to pursue graduate study. If you plan to attend graduate school next year and are interested in applying for one of these grants, stop by Career Services for details. Deadline is February 15, 2002.

Salesmanship Club Youth Camp, Hawkins, TX, offers first-time professional experiences for graduates with interest in human services/education in year-round therapeutic camp setting.

Operations Coordinators for Teach for America. Support organization's 6-week pre-service teacher training institutes in New York or Houston. Application materials available on-line and due by February 1, 2002.

St. Johnsbury Academy offers one-year teaching internships to graduates who wish to work with a mentor teacher. Anticipated openings for next year in math, science, English, Spanish, fine arts, and social studies. Stipend, room and board, and benefits.

Save the dates: The eleventh annual RACE 2002 (Rochester, NY, Career Expo) will be held Tuesday, February 12, 2002 at the Henrietta Holidome.

Job and Education Fair, Wednesday, February 13, 11-4 at Cayuga County Community College, Auburn.

Fellowships: NCRW (National Council for Research on Women). Interdisciplinary fellowship for activists, academics and policymakers. Deadline is January 31, 2002.

Center for Women in Government. Women and Public Policy Fellowships. Open to graduate students in a New York State school in any discipline.


"Spare time" during January? Here are a few suggestions:

  1. Arrange to "shadow" someone for a day or two to explore an occupation or profession that interests you.
  2. Work on your resume.
  3. Attend the New Jersey Collegiate Career Day (January 7) and do informational interviewing.
  4. Research summer internship possibilities.
  5. Narrow your search for a graduate school by researching program materials.
  6. Start/continue review for graduate admissions exams.
