Committees - 2008-2009

Committees on Inclusive and Intercultural Excellence 2008-2009

Background on Inclusive and Intercultural Excellence

There are currently four diversity committees at Wells College: Student Committee, Staff Committee, Faculty Committee, and President’s Committee. These committees originally served as ad hoc groups working independently and collaboratively on issues affecting diversity at Wells. The 2008-09 academic year will mark the beginning of a more formal role for the committees in the governance structure of the college. The reasons for undertaking this change is fourfold:

  1. It provides a strategic, integrated and long-term approach for all campus constituencies.
  2. It provides a formal space for students, staff, and faculty to engage in institutional change.
  3. It provides transparency and responsibility to each of the committee’s constituencies and the campus community as a whole.
  4. It symbolizes Wells’ commitment to diversity, inclusion, interculturalism, and globalism.
This new structure means fundamental changes in the make-up and tasks of the committees. For example, the student committee is an official committee of Collegiate Cabinet (Wells’ student government) with their members elected by students. The Staff Committee has joined Staff Forum, the representational body for staff at Wells. The Faculty Committee has been working on a proposal that allows it to become a regular, standing committee of the faculty. It is anticipated that the notice of motion and proposal will be presented to faculty during 2009. The President’s Committee is now composed of all major adminstrative heads and other committee representatives. The task of the President's Committee is to develop a campus-wide strategic, action, and assessment plan.
